2010 Adirondack trout season opens April 1

Lack of snow and warm temps should result in favorable conditions for the much anticipated trout season April 1st opener. The North Country angler usually has cold high water and snow and ice to greet them at streamside should they venture out in early April, but this year should be the opposite if things continue as they are.

Some of the better early trout streams to try are: The Boquet River in Elizabethtown, and Wadhams. Spruce Mill Brook in Lewis. The angler who chooses to fish a nightcrawler slowly across the bottom has the best chance for early season success.

The Landlocked Salmon run usually begins soon after the ice is out on Lake Champlain. The first warm rains will bring the hungry salmon into the lower sections of the Bouquet, AuSable and Saranac Rivers.

NY deer season harvest numbers in. Statewide numbers about same as last season, Northern zone take is down

Overall the NY State 2009 deer season harvest was about average, but the Northern Zone season buck take was down about 20%. It was a tough season for hunters with many reporting far fewer buck sightings. The unusually warm weather and lack of snow combined with a late start of the rut contributed to the lower numbers of both buck sightings and harvests.

Lake Champlain Summer Fishing Update

Bass fishing has been really good this summer on the big lake. The cool rainy weather has kept the water temps cooler than usual for this time of the year. Usually the big smallmouths are concentrated well offshore in deeper water among the reefs but we have been catching big smallmouth bass in good numbers in less than 15 feet of water closer to the shorelines as well as on the reefs. Largemouths can be found in the deeper weedbeds on the outside of bays and in the reeds early and late in day.



Some good places to fish are out of Westport try the rocky points and reefs of the bay and around some of the steeper drops. Button island reef on the VT. side and the reefs and shoals south of here always hold nice fish. Lures that consistently produce Champlain smallmouth are tube jigs in darker colors like watermelon and brown, Senkos, and crankbaits in crayfish patterns. On the Northern part of the lake drift along the rocky shoelines and points off Isle LaMotte and around the Alburg peninsula. The area around the fort and the Crown Point bridge is good for bass as well as the rocky areas around Fort Ticonderoga.

Always remember to carefully monitor the weather as Chanplain is a big lake and can get very rough quickly.

Early bear season starts September 19

The Adirondack zone early bear season opens on September 19 and runs to October 16 2009. If you desire to hunt bear this is a good time to get out in the woods and try for a trophy bruin as well as being a good opportunity to scout the woods for the coming deer season

Early Season bear hunters in the Adirondacks may use a bow, muzzleloader, handgun, shotgun, or rifle. Check the DEC website http://www.dec.ny.gov/ for current regulations.

Lincoln Pond- A Bass fishing gem in the Adirondacks

A few miles outside of Elizabethtown NY is one of the nicest little fishing lakes in the North Country. The largemouth bass are plentiful here and many trophy fish over 5 pounds are caught each season. If you like fishing for bass in cover like stumps and weeds this lake is for you,

The lake also has a decent amount of northern pike and smallmouth bass and the fisherman with enough patience and luck may find himself hooked into one of the elusive tiger muskies that inhabit this 700 acre lake. Kids can have endless fun catching the abundant perch, crappie and sunfish which will readily take most any offering.

FISHING REPORT:

Lincoln Pond in Elizabethtown has been fishing really good this season. Largemouth bass are abundant and many nice 3-6 pounders have been caught. Fish the weed edges and numerous stumps. Live minnows and crayfish work well. Hot lures have been dark color soft plastics like Senkos and power worms. Spinnerbaits also are great for Bass and Northern Pike here. Smallmouth Bass are hitting on Tube Jigs, Crankbaits and Senkos. Try small tubes and rubber jigs for the nice crappie and perch

Fishing the Boquet River

Here in the Adirondack towns Elizabethtown and Lewis flows one of the most picturesque and productive trout fisheries in the North Country. Starting high in the mountains above New Russia NY it winds it's way about 40 miles before emptying into lake Champlain in Willsboro.

There are many opportunities for fishing the section that runs through E'town and Lewis. There are numerous designated "fisherman parking areas" along the banks that offer good access. The New York State DEC stocks about 11,000 trout each spring in this stretch alone. This abundance of fish along with very little fishing pressure makes for some pretty good fishing.

The Boquet River has seen very good trout fishing from Elizabethtown through Willsboro as the water levels have been good all season. Why not avoid the crowds on the AuSable for the solitude of the beautiful Boquet. Spinners such as Roostertails and Panther Martins are producing some nice Browns. For the Fly Fisherman try Tan Caddis, Ausable Wulff for drys. Stonefly nymphs, Grey Ghost and Wooly Buggers for streamers.
